Why all those complicated names?
Perhaps you have seen an ingredient list or safety data sheet of a perfume before. Names like limonene, linalool, and citral are still quite recognizable, but other chemical names can sound quite complicated.
However, such a name in itself says little about how natural, pleasant, or responsible a fragrance product is under normal use. To understand what is really behind those names, it helps to first know what fragrance is made of.
Fragrance starts with molecules
Everything around us consists of molecules. This applies to water and oxygen, but also to a lemon, a rose, wood, and lavender.
When you peel a lemon, volatile fragrance molecules are released. These reach the olfactory receptors in your nose. Your brain then processes these signals into a recognizable scent experience: citrus.
Plants naturally contain countless such fragrance molecules. Examples include limonene in citrus fruits, linalool in lavender, geraniol in roses, and eugenol in cloves.
Important to know: natural substances are also chemical substances. The word 'chemical' therefore does not automatically mean artificial or harmful.
What is a natural fragrance?
A natural fragrance raw material is obtained from material that occurs in nature, for example, flowers, leaves, fruits, peels, wood, or resin.
Think of orange oil or lavender oil. Such a natural oil usually consists not of one molecule, but of a complex mixture of sometimes dozens or hundreds of different substances.
Precisely this combination can give a natural raw material a rich and complex fragrance character. The composition can at the same time vary slightly due to, for example, climate, soil, harvest, and season.
What does synthetic actually mean?
In this context, 'synthetic' means that a substance has been manufactured through a controlled production process. The word in itself says nothing about the quality or safety of that substance.
Some aroma molecules also occur in nature but can also be made through other production routes. Other aroma molecules are specifically developed to give perfumers fragrance effects that are difficult or impossible to obtain directly from natural materials.
A molecule remains a molecule
Take limonene as a simple example. Limonene is an important fragrance component of citrus fruits and can be obtained from citrus oil.
When a naturally occurring and a manufactured molecule have the same chemical structure and relevant form, the chemical identity of the molecule does not change because the production route is different.
The origin and the molecule are two different things. The way a substance is obtained can differ, while the chemical identity can be the same.
This does not mean, however, that a natural citrus oil is the same as one isolated limonene molecule. A natural oil contains, after all, a complex mixture of different components.
The perfumer: the designer behind the scent
And that's where the real craftsmanship begins. A professional perfume is not created by simply combining a number of pleasant-smelling substances.
A perfumer – also called a nez, 'nose', in French – possesses extensive knowledge of fragrance raw materials and knows how different aromatic components influence each other.
You can compare a perfumer to a composer. A composer works with individual musical notes, but the ultimate goal is not a single note: it is the complete music.
The perfumer does the same with fragrance. Natural raw materials and manufactured aroma molecules form the palette with which a new fragrance composition is built.
From idea to perfume
Developing a fragrance usually starts with a briefing: what feeling should the fragrance evoke, where will the product be used, and what character should the final composition have?
Think, for example, of fresh and clean, warm and homely, floral and elegant, or woody and luxurious.
The perfumer creates an initial formula, smells and evaluates it, and then adjusts the proportions. Sometimes a very small change can already influence the overall fragrance experience.
This process can be repeated many times before the desired composition is achieved. After that, the formula must also be suitable for the product in which it is applied.
Why don't you just smell all the ingredients separately?
A perfume with citrus, lavender, and wood doesn't have to smell as if you have placed three separate ingredients next to each other.
Fragrance ingredients influence each other. Some provide freshness, others depth or warmth. Still others connect different fragrance notes or ensure that a certain impression comes forward more strongly.
The perfumer therefore works mainly on the overall impression. Just as ingredients together form a dish, different fragrance molecules together form one new fragrance experience.
Top notes, heart notes, and base notes
To describe a fragrance understandably, a fragrance pyramid is often used. This divides the character of a perfume into different layers.
Top notes
The first impression of a scent. Often fresh and light, for example, citrus, green notes, or aromatic accents.
Heart notes
The central character of the composition, for example, flowers, spices, or warm aromatic notes.
Base notes
The deeper fragrance notes that usually remain perceptible longer, such as wood, amber, and other warm nuances.

The perfumer brings the different parts together into one recognizable and balanced fragrance experience.
Why are synthetic fragrances used?
Synthetically produced aroma molecules have greatly expanded the possibilities of modern perfumery. They are not simply used as a 'cheap alternative to natural,' but can have an important creative and technical function.
A wider fragrance palette
Not every desired fragrance can be easily extracted from a plant. Aroma molecules therefore offer the perfumer many more possibilities to create new fragrance characters and effects.
More consistent quality
The composition of natural raw materials can vary slightly per harvest. Manufactured fragrances can usually be produced very consistently. This helps to give a perfume the same fragrance character every time.
Precise formulation
The perfumer can use individual aromatic substances very precisely. Some ingredients are only needed in small quantities to noticeably affect the overall composition.
Alternatives to hard-to-obtain raw materials
Some natural materials are scarce, expensive, or require large quantities of plant material. Alternative aroma molecules can offer another possibility in certain formulations.
This does not mean, by the way, that synthetic is inherently more sustainable. The environmental impact depends on the specific raw material, origin, and production method. Conversely, 'natural' does not automatically mean 'more sustainable' either.
Natural and synthetic are not opponents
Modern perfumery therefore does not have to be a choice between natural or synthetic. Both types of raw materials can complement each other.
Natural ingredients can add complexity and character. Manufactured aroma molecules can offer the perfumer additional creative possibilities, precision, and consistency.
It's not about 'nature versus chemistry'. Nature itself also consists of chemical substances. More important is which substances are used, in what quantity, and for what application.
Why is a solvent or carrier needed?
In addition to fragrances, a home fragrance often contains a solvent or carrier. The word 'solvent' may sound technical, but such a component has a practical function.
A perfume consists of different substances with varying properties. A suitable carrier helps to combine these components into a usable and stable formulation.
With an electric diffuser, the way the formulation is dispensed also plays an important role. The goal is not to release the perfume all at once, but to emit fragrance into the environment over a longer period.
The formulation and the electric fragrance system must therefore be adapted to the intended application.
But do you inhale fragrance molecules?
When you smell a home fragrance, volatile fragrance molecules are present in the air. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to reach the olfactory receptors in your nose. This applies to both natural and synthetically produced fragrances.
The relevant question is therefore not only whether a substance can be present in the air, but especially which substance, in what quantity, in which application, and with what exposure.
Concentration and exposure are important parts of a risk assessment. In addition, the properties of the substances used, the product category, and the way the product is used also play a role.
People with a known sensitivity or allergy to certain fragrances are always advised to consult the relevant product information.
Why can a safety data sheet sound strict?
Anyone looking at a safety data sheet often sees long chemical names, percentages, classifications, and warnings. That can sound much harsher than the fragrance experience you have with the product.
However, a safety data sheet is not a consumer brochure. It is a technical document that contains relevant information about, among other things, composition, properties, safe handling of the product, and classification.
Such a document may contain information about individual components and about the classification of the final mixture. Therefore, the document should be read as a whole and not based on a single ingredient or a single chemical name.
Hazard and risk are not the same
When evaluating substances, it is important to distinguish between hazard and risk.
Hazard describes the properties of a substance and what it can cause under certain conditions. Risk relates to the probability that an unwanted effect will actually occur with a certain exposure and application.
The quantity, concentration, exposure route, duration, and method of use are all relevant in this context. Therefore, you cannot determine the risk profile of a complete home fragrance by simply extracting one substance name from a document.

Natural does not automatically mean safer
The word 'natural' has a positive connotation for many people. However, from a chemical and toxicological perspective, natural origin does not automatically mean that a substance is safer.
Essential oils can also naturally contain substances that, for example, have irritating or sensitizing properties. Well-known natural fragrance components such as limonene, linalool, citral, and eugenol must therefore also be applied correctly.
Conversely, a substance does not automatically become unsafe because it has been manufactured through a synthetic production process.
For a proper assessment, the properties of the substance, the concentration used, the overall formulation, and the application are more important than just the label 'natural' or 'synthetic'.
Perfumery is creativity and science
A professionally developed home fragrance is thus much more than 'a nice scent in a bottle'.
Behind a fragrance, various disciplines come together: the creativity and experience of the perfumer, knowledge of natural and manufactured fragrance raw materials, chemistry, formulation, stability, diffusion, product documentation, and responsible use.
It is precisely this combination of creativity, technology, and science that makes modern perfumery so special.

A fragrance consists of molecules. Some fragrance raw materials are obtained directly from natural materials, others are manufactured, and many perfumes combine both.
Natural does not automatically mean better or safer, and synthetic does not automatically mean harmful. More important are the properties of a substance, the quantity in which it is applied, the total formulation, and the intended use.
